Realizing “Financial Inclusion for All” through the Markets of Mexico and Japan: FEMSA Executives Visit Net Protections (NP)
On August 25, 2026, executives of Fomento Económico Mexicano, S.A.B. de C.V. (hereinafter “FEMSA”), a leading global corporation representing Mexico, visited NP.
Operating across 18 countries with a workforce of over 380,000 employees, FEMSA is a global enterprise engaged in a wide range of businesses, including Mexico’s largest convenience store chain “OXXO,” beverages, and financial services.
In the financial sector, FEMSA offers services tailored to both consumers and merchants. These include “Spin by OXXO,” a digital financial service for consumers built on the OXXO store network; “Spin Premia,” a cross-group loyalty point platform; and “NetPay,” a payment business for merchants.
The purpose of this visit was to deepen their understanding of the characteristics of Japan’s payment and financial services, as well as the new services and technologies emerging within the market. In particular, their strong interest in payment-centric services, such as “NP Atobarai,” “atone,” and “NP Kakebarai,” and the underlying technologies that support them led to this visit. We also had the opportunity to learn about the financial and payment services provided by FEMSA, engaging in a lively exchange of opinions and sharing insights into both companies’ businesses and respective markets.
From Payments to Finance: A Shared Focus on “Financial Access”
The central theme of this dialogue was the question: “How can we expand access to financial services?”
The underlying market environments differ significantly between Japan and Mexico. In Mexico, many people lack bank accounts or credit histories. Leveraging the vast store network of OXXO, FEMSA provides payment and remittance options to populations that previously had limited access to financial services.
In contrast, while bank accounts are ubiquitous in Japan, there are still situations where people cannot or choose not to use traditional financial infrastructure, such as individuals without credit cards or those reluctant to register their card details online. Since its founding, NP has delivered new means of accessing financial services by offering Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) options tailored to these users.
Despite differences in countries, markets, and specific services offered, both companies share a core philosophy: delivering new financial experiences to those underserved by existing financial infrastructure.
Building on these market differences, the session featured a dynamic exchange of views on the distinct features of each company’s payment and financial services, as well as their approaches to creating services that consumers choose.
BNPL Evolution in Japan and the Technology Behind It
NP shared insights into the characteristics of Japan’s Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) market, which has evolved alongside Japan’s unique business practices, and the credit underwriting technology supporting it.
Within a commercial and payment culture distinct from Western markets, NP has delivered value to both consumers and merchants through a deferred payment model that lets users receive goods and services first before paying.
Crucial to sustaining this model is credit assessment tailored for each individual user.
NP presented its accumulated expertise and technology in payment processing and credit underwriting, deepening discussions on how to leverage data and technology in financial services.
FEMSA, in turn, presented its key initiatives across the financial and payment domain, including “Spin by OXXO,” “Spin Premia,” and “NetPay.”
Comparing both companies’ services and respective markets created a valuable opportunity to share domain-specific insights and gain fresh perspectives.
Engaging Deeply from Business Models to Organizational Design
The dialogue extended beyond payment and financial services.
The FEMSA team expressed strong interest in “Natura,” NP’s unique organizational framework.
NP values a work environment where every team member thinks independently and acts with intent.
“How do you realign when an individual’s ‘Will’ diverges from the organization’s direction?”
Prompted by this question, participants exchanged views on building an autonomous organization, as well as the nature of organizational decision-making and dialogue.
Comparing distinct approaches across different business domains and corporate cultures made this visit a truly unique and valuable opportunity.
NP’s Pursuit of “Credit”: Gaining Attention Across Borders
A shared theme emerged through these exchanges: expanding the possibilities of financial services centered on “credit.”
Although operating in the vastly different markets of Japan and Mexico, both companies share a common dedication to enriching people’s lives through payment and financial services. This visit served as a meaningful chance to recognize those commonalities while sharing the expertise and initiatives cultivated in the respective markets.
The fact that FEMSA selected NP for their overseas visit and direct exchange is a testament to how NP’s long-standing payment and financial service initiatives in Japan are now attracting interest beyond national borders.
Taking this encounter with FEMSA as a catalyst, we will continue to explore the possibilities of finance across markets and borders, starting from “credit,” and share NP’s initiatives with the world.
